Major John Rigsbee of the US Central Command stated that a senior al-Qaeda leader in Syria had been killed in an airstrike by the US.
The military claimed that it killed Abdul Hamid al-Matar in northern Syria using an MQ-9 jet.
Rigsbee stated, “The removal this senior al Qaida leader will hinder the terrorist organization’s ability to further plan for and carry out attacks that threaten American citizens and our partners as well as innocent civilians.”
Rigsbeee said that there was no evidence that civilians were hurt in the attack.
It came just days after an attack on a US military outpost in Syria. The attack did not result in any injuries to Americans. It is not known if Friday’s attack upon al-Qaida was a retaliation to that attack.
