University of North Carolina Chapel Hill cancelled classes Tuesday in observance of “Wellness Day.”
Two students committed suicide at school within the past month.
“We are currently in the middle of an international mental health crisis. Both on our campus as well as in the country. We are also aware that college-aged students have an increased risk for suicide,” said Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Chancellor. statement. “This crisis directly affected members of our community, especially with the deaths of two students on campus within the last month.”
Guskiewicz wrote the students on Sunday to remind them that it was World Mental Health Day.
According to ABC NewsThe university’s police reported that they responded on Saturday to suicide at Hinton James Residence Hall and Forest Theater on Sept. 4.
