Trump’s long-time ally, Steve Bannon, appeared before the judge on Monday, faced criminal contempt charges for ignoring the congressional committee’s subpoena on January 6, and then aggressively announced outside the court that he was “accepting the Biden regime”. These allegations should be addressed.
Bannon did not file a defense. Bannon will be back in court on Thursday to face the next stage of the trial. This could be the first major trial in connection with the January rebellion at the US Capitol.
Outside the court, he declared that he was “criminal” against the Attorney general, Speaker of House of Representatives and President Biden. He declared, “This will prove to be a horrible misdemeanor for Merrick Grland, Nancy Pelosi, and Joe Biden.”
Bannon, 67, surrendered earlier in day to FBI agents. He was charged on Friday with two federal offenses: refusing to appear before Congress to testify and refusing to supply documents in response to subpoenas.
Federal Magistrate Robin Meriweather released Bannon without bail but required him to visit the court every week. He also ordered him to surrender his passport. Bannon faces a minimum of 30 and a maximum time of one year in prison, depending on the crime.
A giant inflatable mouse that looks like Trump’s former Republican President waits outside the courthouse. A man with a sign reading: “Jokers cannot stand above the law” marched past the courthouse, insulting him and calling him a traitor.
As the second expected witness, the indictment was filed. Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows ignored the committee’s separate subpoena on Friday, and Trump has escalated his legal battle to withhold documents and testimony about the rebellion. . Meadows and Bannon are both key witnesses to the committee, as they were in close contact with Trump during his January 6th Capitol attack.
If the House of Representatives votes in contempt Meadows’ favor, the proposal will be sent to the Department of Justice to be considered for possible prosecution.
Meadows was Trump’s senior aide at the end of his presidency. He was one of several people who pressured the state to change the results of the Democratic Biden 2020 election. Bannon promoted the January 6th protests via his podcast. He had predicted that “everything would break out” the day before.
