The near-future sci-fi improvisation of the Greek sculptor Pygmalion’s myth is the basis of “My Fair Lady”. “I am Your Man” is a surprise that changes gender and has many more surprises. One of the most memorable is hearing Dan Stevens, lead singer at “Downton Abbey”, perform in German with an English accent. He is Tom and the humanoid robot he created was to match Alma, a serious researcher (“Marlen Eggert”, or “Invisible Man”) Alma broke up with Julian (Hans Lowe) recently, but is now well. She is currently conducting a three year scientific research project to decipher ancient Mesopotamian text in cuneiform, with the goal of discovering the earliest examples of poetry.
Alma met Employee, the otherworldly Sandra Huller from “Tony Erdman” who led her to a club. Employee was an intermediary that introduced humans to robots they ordered that met their specifications. It’s almost like watching “Twilight”, but we don’t remember the details.
Tom was not the most pleasant person to be with and Alma is difficult to get along. His algorithm was meant to please Alma. He is a huge fan of Rilke. He excels at math. He can dance the Rumba like no one cares. He is her “dream partner”. When they arrived at Alma’s apartment, the robot was banished to the second bedroom where he could rest with the box. Alma’s elderly father is unable to care for himself and lives alone. She has a younger sister. Alma and Tom need to create a “common story”. They pretend Tom is a blue-eyed German boy Alma met while on vacation in Denmark as teenagers.
Stevens began to become more natural in his speech, and even his actions. Alma is the problem. She wanted to be by herself, like Greta Garbo. While she was working, she left Tom behind in a coffee shop. Alma was shocked when he said Alma that a researcher from Buenos Aires was also working on the subject and would publish an essay before her. He refused to have sexual relations with her. Later, he visited her father with her. Tom was walking in the woods with a group deer and they didn’t seem to be afraid of him. Alma and Tom ran naked across the grass.
Maria Schrader (Maria Schrader), who was the Jaguar in “Aimee & Jaguar”, and the helm of “Stephen Zweig, Farewell To Europe” was the director of “I Am Your Man”. “I Am Your Man” is poetic. Especially the Pergamon Museum Berlin, where Alma works, and houses ancient artifacts including the stunning Greek market gate at Miletus. This is a great example of concrete (and even marble) living and breathing with us in the past.
Huller, who may be Tilda Swinton’s new Tilda, is thankfully back to interview Alma or Tom. We all know the ending of “I am your guy”. Schrader and Jon Schomberg, her co-author (“Stephen Zweig Farewell to Europe”), adapted Emma Braslavsky’s short story. “I Am Your Man,” with its photography by Benedict Neuenfels (“Styx”), and its soundtrack by Tobias Wagner, is able to create magic.
(“I am Your Man”) includes sexual themes and profanity.
