Mumblecore founder Mark Duplas (“Hannah Up the Stairs”) wrote “Language Lesson” in a clever new exercise. Rising star Natalie Morales was also involved in the production and co-starred. “Plan B”, a critically acclaimed pregnancy comedy, also co-starred and was directed by Duplas.
This setup is simple yet complex. Desean Terry, a California resident, bought 100 Zoom Spanish lessons from Carino Morales, who lives in Costa Rica, for his 45 year-old wife Adam (Duplas). Only Carino can be seen on the Zoom screen. She is staring at Will. The background indicates that Carino is in a small area, which could be her work space. Carino is wearing a small, golden cross with her hair in a messy mess. Adam, on the other hand, is a typical, stubble-faced man and lives in a large, well-decorated house near San Francisco.
Their first class, “immersion”, was started by Adam in their backyard hot tub and swimming pool. Adam and Carino were a good match. It turned out that Adam had spent some time in Mexico as a kid, so much of the content for the “Language Course” is Spanish with subtitles.
Then, something horrible happened. Will was killed in a car crash while jogging. Sad Adam and Carino developed a bond that was stronger than the teacher-student relationship. They send each other video messages and are more concerned about each other’s health.
Adam hears Carino say that Carino’s internet will be disrupted one day, so they can only take audio lessons. He suddenly noticed her face and saw that she had lacerations and bruises on her body. You want to know where this is going.
Carino was also affected by loss and Adam shared their common grief. After having a few beers, she called Adam to play the guitar. Morales is a talented screenwriter, actor, director and screenwriter.
Carino, in Lesson 4, “Grammar”, tried to minimize any personal conversation by sticking to his lesson. Adam has always had a disturbing, repetitive dream about Will. One might think that a movie made by someone on a computer screen would lack intimacy. It isn’t true. These two actors are so talented, and Morales is an amazing actor.
“Language classes” help us to get to know each other and make connections. What is more, how can movie viewers fall in love? The answer may not lie in “Chinese Lesson”. It proves the phenomenon.
(The “language course” includes extremely painful scenes and swear words.
