AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive directive Monday prohibiting any entity (including private businesses) from enforcing the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for workers. He also asked for state legislators in order to pass a similar ban.
Although the Republican had previously attempted to prohibit state and local governments from enforcing bans, he was not allowed to enter into rules businesses that their workers set.
It was unclear if the latest order would be upheld by the courts.
Texas has recently seen a decrease in COVID-19 new cases and hospitalizations.
The state is fast approaching 67,000 deaths due to the rising death toll caused by the Delta variant.
