It also celebrated MTV’s 40th anniversary
Angels– Today’s Video of the Year Award went to Lil Nas X at the MTV Music Video Awards. Justin Bieber, a performer and winner of the Artist of the Year Award, returned triumphantly to the stage on this evening.
Justin Bieber was awarded the award and opened the ceremony with a lively performance. He first slid off of the Barclays Center’s roof and sang “Ghost” and “Stay” with Kid LAROI.
Lil Nas X stated that he didn’t take the award for granted when his song “Montero(Call Me By Your Name),” won the final award.
VMA (also known to these awards) blends the great moments of Internet stars Cindy Lauper, Madonna, and Rodrigo with the stunning performances of new stars such a Olivia, Rodrigo or Camilla Cabello. Together they celebrate the 40th Anniversary of MTV.
Bieber was the best nominee for the night, but the majority of the show’s beginning belonged to him. Sunday marked his sixth VMA performance. Shay and he also won the Best Pop Music Award, for “Peach”.
Bieber stated, “As we all know, a lot of things have happened in the world,” in accepting the Artist of the Year Award. We are living in an unprecedented age of Covid. Music is an amazing medium that can bring people together. We all are here.
Soon after Olivia Rodrigo sang her hit song “good4 u”, she was awarded the first prize for the evening with her hit song “Drivers License”. He later won the award for best newcomer.
Rodrigo was nominated his first time and said that he was very grateful to be able “to write music, do what is my passion, and call it my profession.” The singer stated that 2021 was “the most wonderful year” at the beginning of the ceremony. It was a magical year.
Jennifer Lopez, who had rekindled her official relationship with Ben Affleck three days earlier on the Venice Film Festival’s red carpet, presented Rodrigo the award.
Billie Eilish won “Forever Video” for “Your Power”. She said that Alicia Keys had kissed her before she spoke about writing the song and empowering women Cheeks in her acceptance speech.
Eilish stated, “We have to protect our own women at any cost,” Finneas Finneas, Eilish’s brother and producer, clapped from his chair. “We all have power. It is important to not abuse it.”
Lauper, a champion for equal rights for women, presented Bieber his first award.
“Girls still desire to have fun,” he stated, referring to his classic song “Girls just wish to have fun”. “But, we also want fair pay and control over our bodies. You know, basic rights.
Jack Harlow was joined by Lil Nas X, who sang the controversial song “Montero” (please call him by his name). The evening also featured performances by Shawn Mendes and Kacey Musgraves.
Ozuna sang “La Funka” with dancers in teddy bear costumes.
The Best Latin Music Video Award was announced in a statement later that night and was awarded to Eilish and Rosalía because “you will forget it”.
Simone Byers, Olympic gymnastics champ, introduced Dorcas, the host of the show. She performed from a height. Doja Cat, who is supported by cables and slides through crowds, landed on stage during performances of “Been Like This”, and “You Right”.
Before the show even began, Kelly, a machine gun, had a heated exchange with McGregor, a UFC fighter. A video shows McGregor being held in Kelly’s safety. Kelly won the Best Alternative Music Award by the Black Bear for “My Ex Best Friend”, which he wrote.
Kelly stated that she did not want the song to be released at first but thanked her record label for supporting her wishes. Although there was a disagreement during shooting, Kelly thanked the music director.
“Since that we did this I haven’t talked to you because I was fighting on set but it’s a great video and I’m really glad that I won,” he stated. “We won!”
Megan Thee Stallion, who received six nominations for second place in the awards ceremony, attended the ceremony. Five nominations each were received for BTS and Doja Cat, Drake as well as Giveon, Lil Nas X, Rodrigo, and Drake.
Megan Thee Stallion, Bieber, and Doja Cat will compete for the Artist of the Year Award.
Foo Fighters received the Global Idol Award for their performance. This is the first time that the award has been given on VMA. The award recognizes artists and bands who have “an unparalleled career, sustained influence and influence music and in other fields that has maintained a unique degree of global success”.
He has previously invited artists like Whitney Houston, Eminem and Queen to the MTV European Music Awards.
Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins and Nate Mendel were joined by Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett and Rami Jaffee. They performed several of their hits, including “Learn to Fly” as well as “Shame Shame”. This is his first appearance at VMA since 2007.
Eilish presented the awards to the band thanks to MTV veterans Kurt Loder and Tabitha Soren.
Groer stated, “Thanks very much for this award.” “We will be seeing them in 26 years.”
