The 18-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg held yesterday during the Youth4Climate- meeting a speech. In her speech, she called out world leaders for “deliberately lacking action”. In addition, quotes from President Biden, Johnson and Macron are discussed, followed by “blah blah blah”. The speech ended with a roast.
The activist argued that world leaders are using meaningless language instead of taking action. “What has the past 30 years brought us? There are still new coal mines and oil fields being opened. In addition, global emissions are increasing every year.” Greta calls it a betrayal of younger generations.
Greta reiterates several quotes by world leaders on the climate crisis in her speech. “There is no planet B, blah blah blah.” This statement refers to French President Macron. Quotes from world leaders Joe Biden, “jobs, green jobs,” and Boris Johnson, “political bunny-hugging,” are also featured. Followed by “blah blah blah”. “Words that sound great, but haven’t led to any action.” Thunberg calls it empty words and promises.
Greta talks to 400 young people who listen intently and clap with conviction. Greta Thunberg says it is not too late and the world must change dramatically, “as the world has never seen”. The speech ends with a call to action from Greta and the youth: „What do we want? Climate justice! When should it be? Now!”
The timing of the event is not random. A number of ministers will be meeting in Milan in the next few days to prepare for official climate talks in Glasgow, November. Later this week, the young people will present a list with recommendations for ministers. Ministers are expected to try to coordinate their positions on issues on the Glasgow agenda.
