WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of military suicides jumped by 15% in 2020, according to data released by the Pentagon.
Major increases in the Army Corps and Marine Corps fuel suicides.
According to the data, there were 580 suicides in 2013 compared with 504 in 2014.
The number of suicides committed by Army National Guard troops rose by 35% to 103 in 2019 from 76 in 2019. Active duty Army saw an almost 20% increase.
The Department of Defense responded to the report by saying it would “double down” on its efforts to provide resources and care to those in need.
“I feel these loss personally and grieve with the families and loved one of those who have died. Each suicide brings forth waves of grief and pain. “One such tragedy is too many,” stated Lloyd J. Austin, Secretary of Defense.
According to the Department of Defense suicide in the military is most commonly done by using a firearm.
