The nomination of Suffolk DA Rachael Rollins for the US attorney in Massachusetts is before the Senate Judiciary Committee-her non-prosecution list is under attack.
renew: The voting has just been conducted and the result is a tie-11-11. This sends her nomination on to the whole Senate.
The Herald reported the story here. They will publish a follow-up article in the paper tomorrow. This is the link to the videoRollins was not present, but her records are.
As the Herald wrote last week, Senate Republicans delayed the committee’s vote on Rollins’ nomination, and Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton vowed to emphasize that his speaker’s description of the Herald was Rollins’ “The criminal records of colleagues in the Senate, understanding that many of them still care about public safety, will be deeply disturbed by the facts of Rollins.”
9 o’clock in the morning- The hearing is scheduled to start on the hour.US Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is the chairman of the committee. Durbin criticised Republican senators for blocking Rollins’ bid. Durbin spoke out about Trump’s nomination and said that Democrats listen to their state senators. “So, why would committee Republicans drop the 30-year-old precedent?”
Durbin is currently reading Rollins’ resume. As a DA, “she leads a 300-person office,” Durbin said, adding the homicide team helped Boston’s “homicide reduction”.
Durbin is now second in her list of denial prosecutions. He added that “Rollins’ policies did not result in” an increase in the crime rate. Shoplifting and drug crimes are the main focus. This is the bottom line. Durbin stated that a national dialogue is being held to examine what works and what doesn’t work.
Durbin stated, “I support the nomination.”
9:20 am: Voice voting now… the other 7 people all agree and move on. Rollins is up for your vote.
Cotton is now speaking out, calling Rollins “radical, procrime prosecutor”, supported by George Soros.
Cotton called upon Rawlins for comment to “stop” the prosecutions of immigrants, marijuana, and opioids. He said, “She has put her anti-crime agenda into action.”
Cotton is now looking at DA’s non prosecution list.
Cotton stated that deaths due to opioids triggered OD throughout the county. “If she is confirmed… “If she is confirmed…,” he said. “Nominally Prosecutor Rollins.”
