Pfizer and Moderna say they are working to update the vaccine
BostonAccording to the latest research published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Tuesday, the Moderna Labs vaccine has a protective effect against COVID-19 for at least six months. The ad echoed what the pharmaceutical company Pfizer said last week about its own vaccine, which works in a similar way.
Both reports are based on follow-up testing of dozens of people who were injected during the study that led to the use of the vaccine. These studies were carried out before fears that new variants of the coronavirus appeared and began to spread.
Another report published in the same medical journal raised concerns about these variants. Scientists have measured the antibodies that can block the virus in 50 people who have received Sinopharm or Sinopharm vaccines developed in China. Many viruses have shown total or partial loss of efficacy against the virus variants first discovered in South Africa.
The vaccine still seems to be able to withstand the variants originally discovered in the UK, and is now spreading rapidly in the United States and elsewhere.
Pfizer and Modena have stated that if they need to target new variants, they are working to update their vaccines, or may design a booster vaccine.
