NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic’s bid for the first calendar-year Grand Slam in men’s tennis since 1969 ended with a loss to Daniil Medvedev in the U.S. Open final.
Medvedev’s victory Sunday was 6-4 and 6-4. This gave him his first major title, while Djokovic missed out on what would have been his 21st career record.
Djokovic entered the match at 27-0 in 2021, one of four major tournaments in the sport.
These included wins against Medvedev in February’s Australian Open final, as well as titles at Wimbledon in July and June’s French Open.
Rod Laver was 1969’s last person to sweep the Slams.
In 1988, Steffi Graf was the last woman to be a woman.
