NEW YORK (AP) — British teenager Emma Raducanu has beaten Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in the U.S. Open final to become the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title in the professional era.
Raducanu, aged 18, is ranked 150th. To be in the main draw, he must win three matches in preliminary rounds.
Saturday’s win was the culmination of a run that saw her win all 20 sets played at Flushing Meadows.
Raducanu participated in her second Grand Slam event.
This was the first major final between teens since Serena Williams defeated Martina Hingis at 1999 U.S. Open. It also marks the first time that two unseeded professional women have met.
