Peng Shuai was able to make a video call to President Thomas Bach of the International Olympic Committee after the Chinese tennis player was almost three weeks away from public view.
The IOC and Chinese government want this to end a long-running saga that began when Peng was accused of sexual assault by Zhang Gaoli, the former vice prime minister.
This may just be wishful thinking.
The interview was brief and did not provide any follow-ups to her claims. It also invited further questions from Peng, the IOC and China.
The scandal has engulfed the IOC, and it is being widely criticized for allowing the Olympics to go ahead despite the alleged crimes against humanity in China.
