NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana man who’s the oldest dwelling World Struggle II veteran in the US has marked his 112th birthday.
Lawrence Brooks celebrated Sunday with a drive-by occasion at his New Orleans residence hosted by the Nationwide World Struggle II Museum.
Festivities included a Jeep parade, a dwell efficiency from the museum vocal trio, and leisure from New Orleans musicians.
Brooks was born in 1909 in Norwood, Louisiana, and has lived in Louisiana since 1929, the Associated Press reported.
Drafted in 1940, Brooks was a personal within the Military’s largely Black 91st Engineer Battalion.
The unit was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines and constructed infrastructures resembling bridges, roads, and airstrips.
Throughout his service, Brooks needed to ship a load of barbed wire to the entrance when one of many engines within the aircraft he was in went out.
Brooks described the second in an oral history about his service.
He stated to preserve weight, he unloaded the barbed wire and advised the 2 males within the cockpit, who had parachutes, that if the aircraft went down, he was going to latch onto certainly one of them, in accordance with the AP.
Brooks stated they made it by, they usually all “had a giant chortle about that.”
