People often forget to consider the US COVID numbers as they leave for vacation destinations.
The worst increase in US population was recorded right after Thanksgiving 2020. This year will bring more people to the United States, as well as protection vaccines.
Dr. Michael Osterholm of University of Minnesota stated that the worst was not over earlier in the year.
“I think we are left with the question: When does the virus do what they do? What can we do to control it? It makes sense that people travel more and bring more people together. But, Osterholm explained that it is not possible to control how much.
At this point last year, no vaccine was available. There are many vaccines now, with new authorization for children aged five and over.
Osterholm states that it is a concern, adding in pandemic record travel and the delta variant, declining vaccination immunity, new spikes of childhood cases, and pandemic record travel.
“The data from Europe, where we now see countries with 80% vaccination rates that still have significant disease, and deaths that are happening, only reinforce the fact that we need to get almost the entire population, not most, at least of the population protected by vaccination and or by immunity against a natural infection,” he said. It is very likely that this protection will be continually improved by boosters in future.
Last week, boosters were approved by the Centers for Disease Control advisory panel. However, they did not stop encouraging them for all adults. Only those over 50 were recommended.
Osterholm claims they were wrong, and even published an opinion piece in The Washington Post together with Dr. Eric Topol.
He said, “The big question is what it will look like in six, eight or twelve months if you get the booster.” A booster dose can be used to reduce breakthrough infections.
The CDC has released new data that shows that people who have not been vaccinated are 14 times more likely than others to die from COVID-19.
Osterholm’s opinion piece states that 59% of the world’s 50 most vaccinated nations are the USA.
