NASA will launch a “planetary defense driven test” on Tuesday night.
The Double Asteroid Redirection Test is a technique that adjusts the speed and direction of an asteroid using kinetic technology.
NASA stated that DART, the asteroid NASA will be targeting, is not a threat for Earth.
NASA stated, “While there is no known asteroid larger that 140m in diameter has a significant chance of striking Earth over the next 100 year,” NASA reported.
The DART spacecraft will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 10:20 PM PT.
The spacecraft will reach its destination in September 2022, and then begin testing its impact upon the asteroid.
According to the European Space Agency, this will be the first attempt by humans to change the dynamics of a body in the solar system. CNN.
