There are careers full of adventure in name, such as oceanography. This is a fascinating subject, but it is very difficult and requires an affinity and passion for the environment (in this case, the ocean).. If you decide to study this profession, you will hear two types of comments: You are crazy, you will starve! What are you going to continue living with? The other person meant: What a father, I have always wanted to study that! Of course, you will spend surfing on the beach or diving among dolphins. Well, both types of comments are not realistic, but like in any other profession, if you like it, you will be fully committed and passionate, you will be happy and successful, and like me, you will Be able to say “I do what I like to do! And for that, they paid me!”
What’s the matter
An oceanographer has geological knowledge because he knows how our planet was formed and why our crust is still in motion today. Therefore, he knows the minerals that exist, how they dissolve and mix with other ingredients, which ultimately make the water salty. Likewise, it knows the form and concentration of its ingredients. That is, the chemical part. Understand how water and its components mix, flow, and the physical parts. Finally, knowing that there are different marine provinces, and their components move or mix in different processes, Understand why there are different types of creatures, some are fixed on the floor, some are suspended in a water column, some eat others and migrate; In other words, the biological part.
Its average age is 17 or 18. After graduating from high school, you go back to another city to study, and then you start studying and living. You leave the comfort of your home and begin to take responsibility for yourself; you also know other mentalities, realities and situations among college colleagues, which enable you to support, tolerate and respect other views. You experiment in various ways and realize that you are vulnerable to your own flaws or personal, academic limitations, and then you can work hard and solve them Rise. Then, if you want to specialize, you can study for a master’s degree with the help of a national or foreign scholarship, or even a doctorate. Moving to another city will take you to learn about other cultures, and you will also improve your social and cultural level if you don’t want it, because you will understand other parts of the world, and you will not only have professional knowledge, but also have a larger individual development of.
What do oceanographers do?
As an oceanographer, you can find jobs in the public and private sectors in fields related to the use of marine resources, exploration, care, protection and management, education, research, and technological development. As an example, I will introduce my situation to you. I decided to continue my research related to ocean chemistry, I specialize in various changes caused by waste; In other words, marine pollution. I work in the University Research Center of the University of Colima. As part of my work, I teach undergraduate courses in oceanography at the Faculty of Marine Sciences; similarly, I participate in the cooperation of three graduate-level programs across the country.
For my work, I have to go out and take a sample in the coastal lagoon or the ocean itself. To this end, I used small boats from a few hours of small boat samples to large boats that sailed for 31 days to collect various ocean samples. The so-called ocean cruise, and where I and as many as 21 researchers participate at different times and work teams 24 hours a day at the same time. Undergraduate or graduate students accompany us on these coastal or “cruise” samplings, because this is part of their training and part of their technical training. I must say that this is part of my job. I work with Germans, French, Italians, Russians, Chinese, Filipinos, Americans, Spanish, Brazilians, Colombians, Argentines and of course Mexicans. Colleagues live on the boat together. We share experience, knowledge, science and personal knowledge. Just like the Tower of Babel, the official language is English, but suddenly, you see yourself living in a small group, they live together, Try to speak Italian, French or even Russian… This is how I meet great people.
During the other part of my time in the laboratory, I must always analyze everything collected with the participation of students to obtain results. I admit that without them, I am nothing. Then follow the process of publishing results in the form of contributions to knowledge. Therefore, I guide students’ papers, we write articles, book chapters together, and then conduct professional and student cooperation and exchanges with other colleagues from other countries and international institutions. This is how our network develops and consolidates.
Reality tells me that I must cooperate. Today, the problem becomes complicated due to the occurrence of environmental, social, economic, political and cultural factors in the same environment. and so, The survey must be multidisciplinary. I don’t know anything, nor do I have the ability or infrastructure to solve the problem on its own. This became more apparent two years ago when my colleagues from different disciplines and I were invited to collaborate in teams at the national level to make scientific work complementary to the knowledge and experience of different social groups. So that scientific work can solve the real problems of our social ecosystem, Especially the most vulnerable sectors. Therefore, now I work with “land” experts. For example, we try to find a comprehensive solution for the region through effective practice, and solve the ecological problems of the marine environment from economic, social, cultural, gender and other needs. Why not, in the future Will be applied within the country/region.
Now, my research is no longer limited to knowing that there are microplastics floating in the ocean (their possible source), that is, they can combine with other pollutants on their periphery, identify them and quantify their concentration, and how they affect living things. Now, I will invite other colleagues in other disciplines and members of all walks of life so that we can create knowledge together, And understand the reasons why people change their consumption habits, look for alternative materials, change forms and sales channels, or formulate regulations for the effective use of plastics.
Don’t misunderstand the message of this contribution. I am not promoting careers or professional work. Every job and career has fascinating and very useful aspects.I intend to give an example and admit Today’s problems are very complex. To solve these problems, we must cooperate with various actors in society., Researchers and scholars from the fields of society, economy, precision, medicine and engineering, etc.shown as Our joint efforts play a decisive role in promoting the sustainable development of the environment What we depend on.
If different participants collaborate, the results will be improved. If this news falls into the hands of a young man who is looking for a career, please let him know Scientific and academic work is important and necessaryWe need not only entrepreneurial citizens, but also well-trained and enthusiastic professionals at work, leaders in scientific work in various disciplines, citizens with solid principles, and high-quality interdisciplinary work capabilities. Personal and professional training.
