Jazz musicians receive 11 nominations for top music awards
Jon Batiste might be the greatest surprise at the Grammy Awards. This Oscar winner won so many votes that he was nominated for 11 items on Tuesday.
Batiste won Album of The Year for “We Are”, while “Freedom” won Album of Year. This optimistic tribute to New Orleans is a wonderful one. His nomination spans a range of genres including R&B and jazz, American music, jazz, classical music, and film soundtracks.
Baptiste received the Oscar nomination for best audiovisual scoring for his work on Pixar’s “Soul”, earning him the Oscar earlier in this year.
Doja Cat, Justin Bieber, and HER were each nominated for eight awards at the January 31 ceremony. Billie Eilish received seven nominations, while Olivia Rodrigo received seven.
In addition to Baptiste’s surprising dominance, another shocking news is that after the pop star claimed that he would not allow his record company to submit his music for consideration for recording Oscars, The Weeknd received three nominations. He was the recipient of the number one single, “Blinding Lights”, in 2020. But he didn’t receive any nominations.
New voting system
Harvey Mason Jr. was the Executive Director at Recording Academy and was happy with the new peer driven voting system after seeing the nominees. He created the 10-3 plan which allowed more than 11,000 college students to vote in three categories and up to 10 genders. All voters are eligible to vote for the top four.
The system replaces the anonymous nominee review committee which determines who is eligible for key awards. Some committee members claim they enjoy projects that are based on personal relationships.
