It’s almost impossible to imagine it. Anne+Once, crowdfunding was used to create a web series. Now, look at this. Three years later, the two series are available on Netflix. The lesbian Anne series can also be seen in cinemas today. MetroHanna van Vliet, the star of the show, was our guest.
It’s 2017, like Metro al over Anne+Write. There is still nothing. Their plan is discussed by Maud Wiemeijer, screenwriter, and Valerie Bisscheroux, director. “With this we make what we used to miss ourselves.” Last March, a week before corona took hold of the world, lead actress Hanna van Vliet (29) said in a statement. MetroDo the same thing. She, too, missed something like this in her teenage years: “Anne+ making is a necessity.”
Launched was the web series Anne and her friends. BNNVARA was impressed by the success and broadcast two episodes on TV. YouTube helped girls around the world find support for characters who were going through similar experiences. Netflix was able to see this again. Anne+ was removed from YouTube. All episodes are now available in the Netherlands or Belgium on the streaming service. What’s next? There is now the movie of the exact same title. Still produced by Maud Wiemeijer and Valerie Bisscheroux, as well as the lead actress. Hanna van Vliet is now available for interview. In the EYE movie museum, where the “world premiere of” film is. The cinema version of Anne+Anne’s girlfriend Sara (Joumanfattal) lives now in Montreal, Canada. Looking back at 2018, the first web series, the crowdfunding and everyone who selflessly cooperated and acted… what do you think if there is now a cinema film?
Hanna: “Then I’m just very proud. It feels like the culmination of five years worth of very hard work. It is also very special to see the team almost unchanged. Anybody who has ever done everything free of charge because they believed it was important. This is the first film most people will ever make. From Maud to Valerie. Really cool.”
Anne+ was mentioned in your previous MetroInterview a necessity. What is the difference?
“I don’t think there can be enough representation. There will be more. This is great but we only have the tip. I’m hopeful Anne+Distributors and producers can use it as an example and it’s even commercially valuable. This is what we encountered in the beginning. Too niche. It turned out the opposite, as the lhbtiq community is large. They don’t just watch; the hetero audience is equally large. I can only hope that all those viewers of the series now also go to the film.”
