California Gov. A recall election is expected to be won by Gavin Newsom.
The race was called by the Associated Press approximately 45 minutes after polls closed.
Voters were asked two questions at the polls Tuesday, whether Newsom should lose his job and who should replace him if he’s recalled.
A majority of Californians believed Newsom should keep his job. The second question was therefore irrelevant.
After the count was complete, Newsom stated Tuesday night that he was humbled and grateful for the support of millions and millions of Californians.
1.5 million people signed a recall petition, which resulted in the special election. CNN reports The state spent more than $270million on the election.
Opponents of Newsom criticized his administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including lockdowns and mask mandates.
“We said yes, to science. We said yes vaccines. Newsom stated that we said yes to ending the pandemic. “We voted for the right of all people to vote, without fear of fraud or voter suppression,” Newsom said.
In the last days of the election, Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden visited California to show their support for Newsom.
