NEW YORK (AP) — Gloria Estefan has revealed she was sexually assaulted at age 9 by someone her mother trusted.
The Cuban-American star spoke out publicly about her abuse and the consequences it had for her on Thursday during an episode of Facebook Watch’s “Red Table Talk with the Estefans”.
She stated that she once confronted her abuser.
He said, “This cannot happen, you cannot do this.” Estafan said that Estafan told him: “Your father is in Vietnam, and your mother is all alone. I will kill her if she tells me.” The Hollywood Reporter.
Estefan spoke about the pain she felt and the fact that she had spoken to her mother about the abuse. She claimed that she was discouraged by the police from filing a complaint.
Estefan stated that Estefan was told by his mother to not press charges as they believed I would suffer worse trauma if they had to bring me up.
Estafan later claimed that her abuser had publicly criticised her song “Conga” years later. Estafan said at the time that she was ready “to blow the lid off everything,” but she decided to not do it as she didn’t want to be recognized.
She criticised him for “the manipulation, control” but acknowledged that predators do.
