In California, a federal judge issued a decision Friday by ordering Apple to allow app developers to direct consumers to alternate payment methods outside Apple’s App Store.
Fortnite is the creator of popular videogame Fortnite. Epic GamesAfter Apple removed the game from its App Store, Epic filed a lawsuit. Epic sought to prove that Apple’s 15%-30% commissions on iPhone app transactions are illegal.
“Epic Games failed in its burden to demonstrate Apple is an illegal monopolist,” Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers wrote in her decision. “Nonetheless, the trial did show that Apple is engaging in anticompetitive conduct under California’s competition laws.”
According to another rulingThe judge ruled Epic must pay Apple 30% from the approximately $12 million in revenue it received between August 2020 and October 2020 due to breach of contract. Epic established an alternative payment system for Fortnite in Fortnite.
