Food and Drug Administration (FDA), wants food manufacturers to reduce salt content in their products.
The new guidanceIt is designed to help Americans cut down on salt consumption.
FDA stated that limiting certain nutrients such as sodium in our diets is crucial in preventing cardiovascular diseases like hypertension and heart disease.
The FDA may have difficulty reducing salt intake because 70% of sodium consumed by Americans comes from processed, packaged and restaurant food.
FDA stated that the FDA’s final guidelines aim to reduce sodium intake by 12% over the next 2.5-years.
Although a daily intake of 3,000 mg is still higher than the 2,300 mg recommended limit, the FDA believes that even a modest reduction in sodium can reduce the risk of diet-related illnesses.
