Every day, the foods we eat can have an impact on our sleep. Consider how disturbed your sleep can be if you have a cup too much coffee at night. What about food that helps you fall asleep quicker? “Food can be sleep-inducing or sleep-disrupting,” explains Molenaar. “Just like caffeine keeps you awake, food containing tryptophan can make you sleep.”
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that makes serotonin. You will feel more restful if you have more serotonin. Cottage cheese, yogurt and cheese as well as tuna, cheeses, oats, and poultry are some other products that naturally contain tryptophan.
Molenaar warns that bananas with tryptophan are not the best natural aid for sleep. “There are even foods that contain the sleep hormone melatonin, such as almonds and walnuts.”
You can take these natural sleep aids as a snack before bed if you really want to reap the benefits. However, don’t eat those nuts too quickly. “Of course it will take some time for your body to absorb it.”
Molenaar wants to stress that it is unrealistic to expect miracles from almonds, walnuts, and bananas if your entire diet is not in line. “It only really helps if you leave the sugar bombs and don’t eat too late in the evening. It is a good idea to make it a habit of swapping your bag of chips for a bag full of nuts when you’re on the couch. It is also better not to consume caffeine after lunch.”
