With flames advancing toward the signature grove of ancient massive trees in Sequoia National Park, firefighters Thursday fought fire with fire.
Firefighters can use the Giant Forest’s nemesis in a variety of ways to slow down, stop or redirect fires.
This tactic is subject to significant risks, especially if the conditions change.
However, it is often used to protect people, homes and valuable resources such as the grove that contains approximately 2,000 sequoias. This includes the General Sherman, which is the world’s largest tree.
