WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite a long night of frantic negotiations, Democrats are still struggling to reach a deal on President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion government overhaul.
Voting at night has been canceled. Action will resume on Friday.
Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker, had forced the House into an evening session. The Democratic leaders were trying to negotiate a more moderate plan that centrist holdouts would be willing to accept.
After hours of shuttling between the offices and Joe Manchin, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, it was clear that no deal was in sight.
Manchin kept firm to his pledge that he was open to meeting the president less than halfway. The late-night votes were cancelled.
