South American football will follow the lead of Europe
Montevideo.- South American football will be following the lead of Europe and cancelling goals in the club championship starting 2022.
The governing body stated in a statement that “From now on all goals of the Conmebol Championship have the same value and many people who become guests will not be seen as a tiebreaker factor.” It aims to do more justice to sports by doing this.
Combebol made the announcement on Thursday at a Montevideo board meeting. It will be used for the Copa Libertadores or Copa del Rey next year. In July, UEFA took a similar decision.
Palmeiras and Brazil’s Atletico mineiro drew 1-1 in the first leg of their match in Sao Paulo. After Belo Horizonte’s draw 1-1, Verdao was promoted. This only exacerbated criticisms of away goals.
The away goal broke the balance of this year’s defending champion Palmeiras, who entered the Libertadores Cup final against Brazil’s Flamengo in Montevideo on Saturday.
