The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced that one of their assistants has been replaced after he declined his COVID-19 vaccination.
On Monday, the team announced that Steve McCarthy had replaced Sylvain Lefebvre as assistant coach for refusing to receive a COVID-19 vaccine under the NHL’s mandate.
Jarmo Kekalainen, the club’s deputy governor and general manager, stated in a press release that while we were disappointed, it was a personal decision made by Sylvain. He wishes him all the best. “We feel privileged that Steve McCarthy has an outstanding coach at our club, having played in this league, winning championships as a player and being a key member of our hockey operations division as an assistant coach in Cleveland.”
According to ESPN, the league’s COVID protocol requires players, coaches and staff to be vaccinated to participate.
ESPN reported that Lefebvre was an assistant coach for the AHL San Diego Gulls and was hired as a coach in June.
The team didn’t specify why Lefebvre was not vaccinated.
