The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced that one of its assistants has been replaced after refusing his COVID-19 vaccination.
On Monday, the team announced that Steve McCarthy had replaced Sylvain Lefebvre as an assistant coach because he refused to get a COVID-19 vaccine per the NHL’s mandate.
Jarmo Kakalainen, the club’s General Manager and Alternate Governor, said that although we are disappointed, it is one we understand Sylvain made and we wish him well. We are fortunate to have Steve McCarthy as our coach. He has been a member of this league as a player and as an assistant coach in Cleveland.
According to ESPN, the league’s COVID protocol requires players, coaches, and staff to be vaccinated to participate.
ESPN reported that Lefebvre was an assistant coach for the AHL San Diego Gulls and was hired as a coach in June.
The team didn’t specify the reason Lefebvre declined to be vaccinated.
