According to CNN, officials of the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Administration, the Biden administration allowed approximately 100,000 people to legally reside in the United States on Saturday.
The decision will give American Haitians the opportunity to apply for temporary protection status, which is a form of humanitarian assistance that can be granted when it is deemed unsafe for Haitians to return to their country of origin.
The Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, announced a new 18-month humanitarian program appointment. Haitians who are eligible and live in the United States until May 21 can apply for this protection.
Majorcas said in a statement: “At present, Haiti is facing serious security and social problems, human rights violations, severe poverty and lack of basic resources, which have exacerbated the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The decision was praised by activists and praised by Bob Menéndez, the chairman of the Senate’s foreign relations.
