Judith is a retired ballet dancer who is now 70. Hershey was able to make a similar contribution in the Oscar-winning film “Black Swan.”
Judith survived a small stroke and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, so she “made the worst mistake” and locked herself in the manor. This is a retirement community. You are unlikely to leave once you have entered.
This resonates in a tangible way. In an interview with Zoom, Hershey, 73, said that this was what she had been working towards. “Because her Parkinson’s disease was just beginning, her vanity and caring about her family made it difficult for her to want to take it on herself.
“She put herself in this place, but it quickly ended. It became a nightmare.”
One of the highlights in “Manor”, is that it shows Judith and her grandson, Nicholas Alexander. This is a rare example where grandmother and grandson unite.
“I love to show it. Because Judith isn’t your average 70-year old. She is funny, useful, and full of energy. She swears. She swears.
“Age isn’t a factor in their relationships, I just think it’s really uncommon. This is something I’ve never seen in movies.”
Roland is another person in Judith’s life (Bruce Davidson “Mozart in The Jungle”) who is dedicated to his nursing home residents and is eager to include Judith in his “harem”.
Hershey and Davidson, both 75 years old, starred in “Last Summer”, a 1969 Oscar-nominated hit movie. Hershey was horrified by the disturbing depiction of adolescent cruelty and rape in “Last Summer”.
“The movie ended unexpectedly with the seagull dying in shock, which was very painful for me. This is how I cope with guilt, I believe. She said that when you turn 19 and are visible to the public, you will undoubtedly grow up.”
“I don’t have any experience nor caution in the area of media. I simply live my life. Things can easily get misunderstood.
Davidson stated that “Since then we have never actually met each other.” We were only 19 when we last saw each other. It was so amazing to meet a 19 year old and someone who has lived between then.
“It’s great to discuss it in a way we wouldn’t be able to in our teenage years.”
Amazon Prime is streaming “Manor”.
