WASHINGTON (AP) — Military suicides are up 15% in 2020, according to data released by the Pentagon.
Significant increases in military and Marine Corps personnel are behind suicides.
According to the data, there were 580 suicides in 2013 compared with 504 the previous year.
There was a 35% increase in suicides among Army National Guard troops, which rose from 76 in 2019 and 103 last year. Active-duty military saw a nearly 20% rise.
The Department of Defense stated that it will “double down” its efforts in providing care and resources for those who require it to respond to the report.
“I feel these losses and grieve with the family and loved ones who have lost them. Each suicide brings about waves of grief and pain. One suicide is too many,” Lloyd J. Austin, Secretary for Defense, said.
According to the Defense Department, suicide is the most common method within the military.
