Maud is on holiday to Croatia, but where she is supposed to relax, the holiday turns out to be a lot of stress for her. The landlord has not been able to reach her and there is a water leak at her home. Jessie is also a concern. A dead rat was also placed on her doorstep. Will she file a complaint?
I have only a few more days in Croatia, and I don’t want to spend my time worrying about home. But, I can’t resist those dead rats. Whispering, I try to tell Tommy what’s going on; afraid my mother will hear. Mothers apparently have ears as big and antennae as their mothers (at least, that’s how my mother describes it). My mom can see my stress no matter what I do. She apparently can catch the word “rat”!
“Do you have a problem with rats?! Hence the leakage for sure!” my mother shouts loudly. I look at Tommy and am stunned. Tommy looks shocked back at me, which sets off alarm bells for mom. “Or is it not? Maud… tell me what’s going on?!”
When I grudgingly admitted that a dead rat has already been deposited on my doormat twice, my mother has turned white. Although she is just a few steps away from calling the emergency services, it is obvious that Mom will not be able to calm down in this circumstance. “You have an intruder!” She exclaims, shocked. Willem attempts to placate her but it doesn’t work. She starts talking like a headless chicken about security, calling the police, filing reports, and running programs. “SBS is doing something with this, isn’t it? Or was it John van den Heuvel? We have to do something about this!” she roars, busy with her phone in her hand.
“Well, at first I just thought about filing a report. Let’s see, Mom. I’ve had a dead rodent on my doorstep twice. I haven’t been stalked for years… I don’t think John van den Heuvel is going to bother with me”, I mumble. My mother demands that I report immediately. I pick up my laptop and start typing in the garden. My mother is watching me closely to make sure she understands that I am sending the report. mothers…
The next day I must honestly say that a small weight has been lifted off my shoulders. They should be able to do something about it, and hopefully the rats’ crazy behavior will stop. The plumber will cost a lot, but the leak should be fixed. When we finally contact our landlord, I pass the costs onto him.
Jessie is calling me for the sixth and final time in just two days. I get three rings from the phone and then I hear a crackle. “Maudje!” I hear Jessie calling. While I can clearly see that she is trying to sound enthusiastic, it is not the case for me. She sounds afraid. Jes! I shout angrily. “Don’t leave me hanging until I tell you what’s happening. I’m terrified!”
Then I hear Jessie burst into tears on the other end of the line. “I wanted to wait until you were back before I told you, but then it has to be like this: something very bad has happened to Jelle…”
