Two high school students in Florida were arrested Thursday, accused of plotting to attack school.
“This could have been the next Parkland massacre, but we put them in the planning stages,” said Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno.
According to authorities, the students were 13 and 14 years respectively. They were interested in the Columbine school shooting that left 13 people dead.
Marceno stated that Harns Marsh Middle School in Lehigh Acres was contacted by school officials after a student reported to them that one of the suspects had a gun inside his backpack.
Marceno stated that the backpack contained no weapon, but that the student had a map that showed where the school cameras were located.
Marceno further investigated and found that a gun as well as knives were in the student’s homes.
Marceno stated that the boys would be subject to a mental evaluation.
